Finding Me – Adelaide Fringe Review – 4 stars

In the artists’ own words, “A show about transformation, acceptance, identity, sacrifice and self love, in a world confused by gender, sexuality and adversity.”

Co-created by Phi Theodorous and James Dean, this sensitive and thought provoking show promotes love, compassion and understanding through stories and songs.

In the setting of the ‘Rainbow Happiness Support Group’, four diverse characters, all performed skillfully by Phi, share their stories with the audience. The highly personal and intimate tales are interspersed by original songs, written and performed by the creators. James accompanies Phi’s ukulele and melodic and beautiful singing, expertly on keyboard.

The characters bare their souls and share confidences and revelations as if they were actually in the safe space of a support group. This audience was clearly affected, exhibiting tears, gasps, laughter and intangible and subjectively observed personal emotions as they found points of connection.

The character profiles were developed from months of writing inspired by real people’s stories. The effort and dedication to honour and respect the stories is evident in the depth and sensitivity of the storytelling.

Finding Me aims to entertain, educate and inspire audiences to explore and be open minded about people’s experiences that may be different from their own. From the audiences reaction, this was achieved.

“We celebrate you for who you are.”
