Adelaide Fringe is ready to dazzle once more and a sure bet for entertainment is one of Emma Knight’s shows. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing many of her shows over the span of years and her professionalism, creativity and often, unusual venues, are always a highlight.
Sam About Town caught up with Emma recently to learn more about her upcoming shows and to get the inside scoop on Beauty & the Bachie, an original musical that sounds like a lot of fun.
Produced by Emma, with music and lyrics by both Emma and Samara Gill, creating this production has been a labour of love and many laughs. United by their love of watching the TV show, The Bachelor, Emma and Samara enjoyed the romance of it initially and pre-Covid was a great way for them to catch up amongst their busy lives setting aside time to watch and enjoy. Over time the romance of it wore off slightly, and although they still enjoyed it, they could feel some cynicism creeping in. One idea led to another and they wrote two songs together, then sat on the idea, particularly during Covid restrictions and yet couldn’t let it go. Emma said, “I feel it’s a good one.”
Following that feeling, Emma successfully obtained a Fringe grant and suddenly they had 2 months to create the show. Nothing like a deadline to spur creativity!
Boasting a cast of 9 and original songs, the musical is a parody of the TV show and follows a similar format, but with many more laughs.
“Join us at the bachelor pad to watch our Bachie head on multiple dates with some stereotypical beauties. One woman will be sent home after each song, narrowing down the pack to find his one true love…”
A song to definitely look out for is ‘Cocktail party (Phwoar)’ – have you seen that there is always a girl trying to push her luck and get a kiss with the Bachelor right at the start? Then this is the song to capture that!
The musical takes a polite dig at the show, but only in good spirit and also looks a little deeper as to why people go on the show. All these insights and the romantic adventure are interspersed with songs and music to have you toe-tapping, feeling upbeat and smiling.
Beauty & the Bachie will be performed 16 and 17 February 7.30pm at Star Theatres, and 23 February 7.30pm at The Parks Theatres, plus a preview show at The Parks Theatres on 14 February.
Tickets for Beauty & the Bachie are on sale now via the Adelaide Fringe here.
