Prompt Creative Centre
9pm Saturday 1st June
On Saturday we were lucky enough to catch the last performance of ‘Strong Female Character’ at the Prompt Creative Centre. This cosy and inviting venue was the perfect setting for a show that celebrated the diversity and tenacity of women, demonstrating that strength isn’t all about muscles.
Presented by debut producer Brandy Snap, ‘Strong Female Character’ was an empowering celebration of the influential female figures from popular culture, brought to life through the expressive art forms of burlesque, cabaret, and comedy. The characters portrayed by Brandy Snap’s talented cast included: the independently strong Wonder Woman, demonstrating the spirit of freedom and justice; the darkly elegant Morticia Addams, who exuded a unique charm and sophistication; and even the bold Miss Piggy, who was unexpectedly alluring on pole. Each artist on stage offered a distinct interpretation of feminine empowerment and individuality.
The performance even included an “illuminating” sketch on how to write well-rounded female characters in fiction. This sketch, whilst hilarious, resonated deeply with some of us, who often find ourselves exasperated by the two-dimensional portrayals of women in popular TV shows and movies. These portrayals, which often depict women as characters in need of rescue, were contrasted sharply by the multi-faceted and independent characters presented in the show. It was more than just a performance; it was an illuminating journey into the evolution of the ‘strong female character’ trope and its, frustratingly common, misconceptions.
Overall, the evening was a celebration of empowerment; filled with laughter, amazing costumes, and captivating performances. Unfortunately, ‘Strong Female Character’ has wrapped up with the final curtain call of Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival 2024. But, if you didn’t get the chance to catch it this time, don’t worry. Brandy Snap’s future productions promise to be just as powerful and thought-provoking.
Keep an eye out for more from this gifted producer and the incredible talents she collaborates with. Their collective demonstrates the power of diverse talents and personalities coming together on a single stage, to harness the power of storytelling.
