“That’s why we are all here; to be in the moment”, drawls compere and sizzling cabaret star, Bernie Dieter in her sensual and engaging way.
And in the moment we all were. Immediately upon entering the spectacular Spiegeltent we were immersed in an atmosphere of decadence and excitement. The 4 piece band set the scene with dynamic and energetic Weimar-punk jazz to a backdrop of lights and stage fog. Roving performers wandered around creating anticipation.
Bernie Dieter burst onto the stage in an aura of fierce, electric and totally captivating energy. The show promotion clearly stated that “no seat was safe” and she found three audience volunteers who revelled in her attention. Her somewhat frightening and powerful persona was perfectly balanced with warmth, cheekiness and an abundance of humour and charm.
Enigmatic and talented, Bernie regaled us with her original songs and humorous antics. A superstar who demands attention. Compelling and entertaining, we were riveted by her voice and personality. As a compere Bernie was fluid as the oil keeping all the acts flowing.
What a talented line up! The variety in this show was well planned as was the pace. Mostly frenetic and energetic, there was a very sensitively performed breather with Bernie on vocals and the super talented Beau Sargent stunning us with his strength and style in an aerial display.
We were also treated to the one and only Gingzilla, a 7 foot drag queen who has his own inimitable style. He was hilarious and so entertaining with enviable stage presence.
I prefer not to share too much detail as it is so delicious to experience first hand. As a teaser I shall entice you with imagining a living sex doll, comically performed by Leah Shelton, a very funny cynical and jaded mime artist, Le Mime Tipi and the outrageous Kitty Bang Bang teasing us and wowing us with fire.
Making its South Australian debut after setting records as one of the most successful cabaret shows ever at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018, Bernie Dieter’s Little Death Club is dark, dirty and debaucherous. It is tastefully naughty, immense fun and extremely entertaining.
Bernie says that she loves being on stage, “surrounded by punks, freaks and weirdos.” I’m not sure if she meant her fellow performers or us as an audience. I’m quite happy with that description as an audience member as I was with them every moment and transported to a decadent world and I loved every minute of it.
