Temporary – 4.5 stars

Temporary is a one-woman comedy written by Katie Lees and directed by Nisrine Amine.

It’s old school Fringe, lots of value, modest production, limited props and just wonderful. Well worth an adventure to The A Club Adelaide in Waymouth Street.

It’s a simple, funny, clever and witty parody of a day in the life of an office reception temp.

The play centres around an important day: the ergonomic chair supply company is planning a big merger.

Lees’ character Amy, the receptionist, is over-qualified, over-worked and undervalued. She’s charged with organising the VIP function to celebrate the merger, with very little information about what’s required and who’s being invited.

Dealing with endless requests, multiple emails, challenging colleagues and an executive assistant with an overinflated ego, Amy navigates her way through the day, giving the audience funny, insightful takes on the often unrealistic ideals of modern office politics and corporate goals.

Masterfully switching between her own character, those of the executive assistant, the sleazy guy across the office, and the sexy guy from design, Lees demonstrates her skill as a method actor and the audience is thoroughly entertained throughout.

The intelligent jokes about modern practices including ethical eating and mindfulness are relatable to almost everyone and give people a serious take home message too.

Temporary continues at the Loft at A Club Adelaide,109 – 111 Waymouth St, February 25 & 26 at 9pm.
