Who doesn’t enjoy a good love story? Well this is an amazing love story, but wait…..there’s more to this enchanting tale than your standard love story.
Across society we are well versed with Disney and fairytale themes of true love, princes and princesses and gallant knights rescuing maidens in their quest for love and happily ever after lives.
But what if dating Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Snow White didn’t feel, deep down in your heart, quite right? What if it was the princes and knights who were catching your eye?
During this one man show, written and performed by award winning and renowned actor, singer, activist and all round fabulous star, we follow the journey of Prince Henry as he travels on his adventure to find true love.
But where can he find a handsome man of his own when he’s the only gay in the Kingdom!
Cue Fairy Godfather. Resolved to find true love, Prince Henry is transported from his seemingly comfy life and beautiful Kingdom, to a scene far removed from his experience. The London gay scene.
From here our magical and mystical journey traverses through songs, theatre, cabaret, a variety of characters, costume changes and much hilarity. Musical numbers including such gems as “One Day My Prince Will Cum” and “O, I’ve Just Come Out To The King”, have the audience laughing and cheering with open delight. They are brilliantly written and performed, and Rich’s stage presence is commanding. Interspersed with the laughter are some serious messages. Rich manages to seamlessly weave in views and material about chem sex, consent , HIV and social LGBTIQ commentary.
Rich’s writing and performing are superbly supported and shaped by the creative and inspired team of, director, Denholm Spurr and choreographer Simone Murphy.
Rich is a talented performer and his London West End experience, among others, really shows. He is charismatic and endearing. The audience is captivated in his presence, hanging on every word and reacting to every considered expression. Deliberately camp, he is in turn erotic, saucy and sexy as well as fun and cheeky. I suspect most of the audience falls under his spell and wishes they could be his one true love. Such is the magic of the stage – oh, and those amazing boots and high kicks of course.
Happily Ever Poofter is at Gluttony until 1 March.
