YUCK Circus

Reviewed by Emma Kew.

The only thing packed tighter than space at Gluttony this Adelaide Fringe is whatever is smuggled in the briefs of the YUCK Circus gals. With bulges brimming, six young female performers strut into the tent as hyper-masculine Aussie parodies with the seediest little moustaches you’ll see this side of the Torrens.

With a quintessentially Australian sense of humour we are shown several, all too familiar, female-centric situations including awkwardly timed periods, the perils of being catcalled and receiving unsolicited dick-picks. As overused as some of these troupes may be, the YUCK team cleverly punctuate the skits with incredible physical dexterity. Leaping centimeters in front of our faces they take us on a journey of subverting what the female body is capable of, but still hasn’t been given the permission to do.

YUCK Circus

YUCK is unlike many other circus shows on at the moment, because it doesn’t define itself through the lens of circus. Instead, it uses elements of circus (as well as song, dance, text and live music) to critique Australian masculinity with their female bodies.  Stand out moments include an aerial performance like you’ve never seen (or heard) before and an assault on a Nutella jar that may be more realistic than many of us care to admit.

After great houses across Australia, these muscle queens deserve more bums on seats than they’ve had. Head down to the Ukiyo tent in Gluttony to support young Australian artists and their work!
