A national emergency is declared. Civil liberties are restricted. Theatres and nightclubs – intellectual, artistic havens – are closing. A chanteuse takes to a smoky stage in musical defiance. A postmodern cabaret for a world on fire, inspired by the Weimar Kabarett tradition.
This year, the Adelaide Fringe is offering many ‘watch from home’ live streaming options. The renowned and talented Hartstone-Kitney Productions is a South Australian based multi-award winning company, specialising in theatre, and immersive events. Their cabaret show, The Reichstag is Burning, offers both in person attendance at the Black Box Theatre in the beautiful Adelaide Botanic Gardens, and an online live streaming version that can be watched from home.
Our guest reviewer, Deena M P Ronayne, had the pleasure of viewing the virtual version of the show and has this to share:
One of the great things about doing a virtual show in these unprecedented and hopefully unrepeatable times is seeing what others have come up with this year from all around the world. I was able to catch a virtual performance of The Reichtag is Burning with Joanne Hartstone as part of #blackboxlive in the 2021 Adelaide Fringe Festival. This show is a classy and sexy mix of historical content, cabaret, and smart humor. It definitely works from a viewer’s standpoint watching it virtually and I am sure it is a stunner in person as well! Great work and I hope to see Joanne’s work in person some time in the near future as well.
